Remember those lush, thick burgundy curtains you used to wrap yourself in, the ones that hung in the drawing room in Grandmother’s old country house? You know, the house she ended up selling to the National Trust because it was ‘just a smidgen’ bigger than she needed after Grandad died and they told her they could only install the stair lift on the back (FKA servant’s) staircase? There’s something about putting this Portugal shirt on that reminds you of those curtains. They invoke a different era, one of class and finesse – Figo, Sousa, Rui Costa, tea parties in the orangery – and thus for nostalgia’s sake, you shall buy it. Even if it was only worn during qualifying for Euro 2000 when Portugal finished 2nd in the group after losing at home to Romania.
