Story of the shirt:

Probably the most classic Newcastle shirt ever, this legendary Adidas effort was worn by the club across two seasons, one of which – 95/96 – has remained infamous on Tyneside ever since. With Kevin Keegan as manager, the Magpies stormed to a 12 point lead by January, and looked odds on for the title with 15 games to go. However a collection of poor performances and dropped points allowed Man United to play an unprobable game of catch up, and somehow Newcastle were eventually pipped to the title by just 4 points on the final day of the season, robbing them of what would have been their first league win since 1927. In 95/96, star of this shirt 'Sir Les' Ferdinand netted an impressive 29 goals wearing the number 9, contributing hugely to the title challenge. In the summer of 1996, however, goal-machine Alan Shearer arrived for a world record fee of £15 million, and upon arrival asked Ferdinand if he would mind giving up the coveted number 9 shirt. Kindly Sir Les duly obliged, and therefore moved to the number 10 shirt for the 96/97 season, where he scored another 21 goals and forged a devastating partnership upfront with Shearer. Overall, Ferdinand scored 50 goals in 84 appearances on Tyneside, before being sold to Spurs in the summer of 1997. We salute you, Sir Les!
