Story of the shirt:
This splendidly 90s Umbro design was worn by Man Utd for two consecutive seasons, 96/97 and 97/98. 96/97 was a success, with the club winning the Premier League title with a comfortable seven point lead over their nearest rivals. The end of the season brought a shock, however, when talismanic centre-forward and club captain Eric Cantona announced his decision to retire aged just 30. Despite replacing him with Teddy Sheringham, United weren't able to defend their title in 97/98, blowing a twelve point lead over Arsenal to concede the trophy, and coming away with no silverware except for the Charity Shield.
This shirt will forever be remember though, for Cantona. Especially for the iconic image of his celebration after scoring one of the goals of the Premier League era – this sumptous chip against Sunderland.
