Having acquired Christian Vieri from Lazio during the summer for a then world-record fee of €49m, Inter's formidable strike force consisted of Vieri and OG Ronaldo, on paper a devastating combination. However after losing Ronaldo to injury (he only played 8 games all season) and then also Vieri a few weeks later, Inter lost momentum and – despite also having Roberto Baggio and Clarence Seedorf at their disposal – finished 3rd in the league behind arch rivals Milan in 2nd and eventual champions Juventus.
