EURO 2020 PREVIEW
Is it? Could it possibly be? Does it even remember which is the right driveway? The proverbial ‘coming home’ fever is already well underway, with England and their (now) adoring public buoyed from an unexpected success story in Russia 2018, finally shedding their big tournament fear on gripping run to the semi final. Eventually, as we all know, Modric’s Croatia were the side’s undoing, and fascinatingly a repeat of that encounter is first up for the Three Lions at Euro 2020. It has to be said, things are quite different now in terms of personnel. Gareth Southgate’s famously cultivated ‘club’ style atmosphere remains, but the year delay has certainly helped England, with an incredible array of talented fresh faces now making up the squad, many of whom would not have been there had the tournament actually taken place in 2020. Phil Foden, Mason Mount and particularly Jude Bellingham are all incredibly exciting additions (scary side note, Jude Bellingham was in Year 8 during Euro 2016 and watched from the classroom…) who are making waves at club level, and whilst England are tipped by many as favourites there is still a feeling that one of these players has the potential to be the competition’s break out star. Jack Grealish should be included there too, despite being ancient in comparison at 25. With an squad busting with fresh talent, almost all their games at Wembley and a mouthwatering international derby against Scotland, what could possibly go wrong??! See you at home.
