France. Everybody’s favourite for this summer’s tournament are not only current World Champions, but also carry the history of famous victories in the 1998 World Cup and again at Euro 2000. Is there a more iconic image in French football than Zizou in the home version of this shirt clutching the trophy? Or of him vaulting a challenge wearing this away version in their knockout game against Italy?
Meanwhile, their squad for Euro 2020 is packed full of familiar faces, with none more surprising than that of Karim Benzema, sensationally recalled aged 33 after 6 years in the cold. Aside from that, the majority of the players are well established – the likes of Mbappe, Griezmann, Kante and Pogba needing no introduction – but there is a smattering of youth too, perhaps most notably Jules Kounde of Sevilla and Marcus Thuram (yep, that Thuram) of Mönchengladbach who’ll both be hoping to disrupt the pecking order. On pure squad depth alone, it’s hard to look past the French, but they have a fiendishly difficult ‘group of death’ with holders Portugal and Germany, so anything could happen…
